Artist Statement

Drawing is the centre of my practice. I am driven by a need to cultimate an intimacy for the viewer, by creating detailed compositions of layering, linework and pattern.  I am interested in the idea of a constrained form, holding the detail inside it. My research has led me to look at those artists whose work echoes a subtle, seducing and intricate way of mark making. I am driven out of a curiosity to create images through experimental interventions, using a limited colour palette, graphite, inks and paper. The idea of drawing in a contemporary context as an investigation into surface, space, outline, edge, mark and imprint is what drives me within my work. It is my intention to extend my drawings into printmaking, currently Drypoint, which seems a natural extension of my practice. I can then continue to work on surfaces that already contain information, such as embossments, frottage and photography, using detailed mark making in a very intentional way.
